Many of you know ESA executive members, Ed Jewell and Garry James, from our fairs especially. They are both stepping down from roles in the Ephemera Society after decades of service. Garry retired as treasurer in 2024. Lyndel Walker kindly stepped up to be the next secretary.
Edwin will retire as treasurer at the end of this financial reporting period/the AGM. He has been the one and only treasurer for the ESA. He will work with his replacement (seeking applications now) to ensure a tidy transition.
What does the treasurer do to keep the ESA ticking over?
The treasurer needs to:
- Provide an annual report on finances for the AGM;
- Pay bills;
- Report to the committee about how expenditure versus income is going;
- Advise on whether the subscription fees should go up for the first time.
- Organize payment of invoices – the fairs; the symposium; the publications;
- Organize investment of funds to get a return but also to have funds available for regular and one-off expenses.
Ed assures that it is no more difficult than managing your own household budget.

Limited terms; in Melbourne?
I would like to suggest that all ESA positions like president, secretary, treasurer, Symposium organiser, fair organiser, editor of a publication have a limited term, say three or five years, so no one is taking on a lifelong commitment.
The treasure needs to report to meetings and the AGM. But if someone outside Melbourne took the position on we could manage this via phoning in or zoom.

Why should Ed be allowed to retire from this role?
Ed is the ESA’s one and only treasurer. Yes, amazing, the quiet achiever, the unflappable one. So thank you very much Ed.
Bad news
We cannot function without the roles of treasurer and president being filled. The ESA is governed by Victorian law that requires this. So please consider taking on one of these roles.
