THE EPHEMERA SOCIETY’S GOALS INCLUDE DOCUMENTATION OF EPHEMERA and luckily we have members and friends to assist with this.
On this occasion we acknowledge Cheryl Ridge, who we knew was an expert on Tuckfields’ cards. We had sent her this reference shot of a card included in the ephemera from Michael Aitken’s collection in the recently published issue of the Ephemera journal which as you know is devoted to kookaburras.
Cheryl advised:
That is card No 20 from the Tuckfields Tea bird cards series. That design was one of the first releasedas the initial series had just 32 cards. It got extended and all up there were five series of 96 cards thatspanned several decades from the late 1950s/early 1960s up to 2008.Series One to Four were illustrated by Deidre Hunt (Cards 1 to 96, 97 to 192, 193 to 288 and 289 to 384)Series Five (cards 385 to 480) was illustrated by the late Sue McInnes. The earliest Tuckfields bird card album actually features a lovely Kookaburra on its cover. Attachedis a sample photo.I also remembered that there was a Kookaburra card in Series 5 so I will take a photo of thatand send it through to you separately.Hope this helps with your “kookaburra project”.
Mark Calabretta and I were involved in a research project on the Tuckfields cards. It ended up over 100 pages and was available online as a PDF. However it does not seem to be appearingonline now so I will contact Mark to see whether it will still be available somewhere for downloading. I ofcourse have my own copy but it would be too large to email (over 20mb). It would be a very usefulresource for collectors if we can find a way to make it available again.
