HOW DO WE DO JUSTICE TO THIS NATIONAL INVENTION AND PREOCCUPATION? IT IS IMPORTANT TO US:
Why? We are a distinctly and proudly Australian society – not xenophobic; not overly patriotic – but interested in exploring and promoting the australian in thinking, sport, design…
Here is a lovely and unusual starting point on footy – the backcover of a knitting pattern book. It was in the time of the VFL (Victorian Football League); only twelve clubs are playing. It is pre decimal currency, so we date this as being from the early 1960s. Any thoughts on this from readers?
The knitting book of course uses the language of the time – guernsey for jumper for a player; sweater for jumper for a fan.
The motifs are idiosyncratic – why is the cat the only one dressed up in footy gear?
We will be a little more serious in the future. We will be guided by our members with football expertise. Thanks already to Rick and Margaret Milne for many many good ideas.
If you have something to contribute, let us know.
