PENCIL ME IN FOR THE NEXT DANCE? We used to literally do this with a dance programme.
These two programmes (small double sided cards really) are both from 1907 and from Hawthorn. The first uses an eye catching font; the second has an emphasis on a detailed sketch of a lacrosse field. Only the second has a hole for a pencil to be atttached.
This is an earlier programme, from 1886. It is a folding card with a colourful card and the inside listing the dances, no pencil.
We are posting these as we are wondering if there is anyone out there in the wide world who knows something about these charming social records. We have consulted Maurice Rickards’ Encyclopedia of Ephemera but this is a rare brief item with little real information. So if there is someone out there who have researched these card records of romance and the light fantastic, then please contact us via the comments box.
