Bottle collector Rob Beer, who is doing a bottle presentation at this year’s ESA symposium, was asked about the bottle in this image, and he emailed this information:
“I have this bottle in two sizes and later a version in four sizes.
The bottle you’re referring to is made for a pharmaceutical company in England, London.
The embossing on the front of the bottle is a monogram of the company’s initials.
BW&Co in a circle. Burroughs Wellcome & Company also known as Wellcome Chemical Works.
Silas Burroughs & Henry Wellcome, US pharmaceutical salesmen. They started the company in London in 1880. The bottle contained Aspirin, Acetylsalicylic Acid.
The newer version of the company’s bottle in the collection has the same shape and closure, with embossing BW & Co on one side and Tabliod on the other side of the bottle. Tabloid is BW&Co’s Trademark for various small medical products, aspirin, bandages, etc.
It is from this bottle vintage, I found paper labeled bottles with this info on them. And again more modern bottle versions had Empirim on the paper label, I tried to find out a bit more about Empirim but ran into a dead end.
Also, the bottle is closed by a metal screw with a cork insert to its underside and a wad of cotton wool to stop the pills from being shaken about.
I include this as the lid is also embossed (which I don’t have). I’ve seen on the internet many different embossing types.”
