LOVED AND LOST OR SHOULD THAT BE, LOVED AND MISPLACED
Long time ESA member DGH remembers his first piece of ephemera.
Earliest treasured (albeit untraced) item:
A signed photograph of Roy Wright, ‘Gentle Giant’ Richmond ruckman, 1952 & ‘54 Brownlow Medallist. Black and white action shot. Ballpoint inscription: Best Wishes / David / Roy Wright. David is in different ink, but clearly the same hand.My surmise is that he pre-signed them in batches and a name could added – or not.
Back before Australian Rules footballers were highly paid for their involvement in the game most worked full-time. Roy Wright was a sales representative for a Flinders Lane warehouse, and regularly called in at my parents’ Drapery store in Thornbury.I am pretty sure I was already a tiger fan before my father brought home the photo in the mid fifties. Though I switched to Carlton a year or so later, I have never consciously disposed of Roy’s photo and hope it may one day turn up in an unsorted box.

The bitterest sadness for collectors of ephemera concerns damage, loss or depreciation…
And a prospective worry – if it’s never created in the first place
