OUR THEME AT THE FEBRUARY 2024 SHOW + TELL MEETING WAS LOVE – we had a mix of regulars and newcomers – showing some fascinating ephemera and interpretations of love. Apologies for the quality of the images and for the selection which didn’t capture all there was to see – come next time.
Some members like Andrew H, who began looking about week beforehand, found some fine pieces of love ephemera.
Debra P had an intriguing item also on the chocolate theme. This wooden box is in a cardboard box Debra has made to protector (she is a collector and a conservator and bookbinder). Doing a rough Trove newspaper search, in 1883 this product was being advertised in fancy boxes. By 1911 it was being sold in packets. Can anyone throw more light on this?
Ed Jewell brought material about contraception and the related topic of sex education – these occupy two boxes in his ephemera collection, here is a selection, some of them part of very large educational series.
A little off piste but still interesting – not everyone can or wants to follow the theme and others missed the message. But that led to other interesting and rare material.
John K bought some very special tins including one that he had acquired recently. He explained that the Menz, a South Australian biscuit maker, had used a tin made by and for an English company. They had just had a new lid with their name made for it. But the tin is labeled as if it was made completely in Melbourne.
David started the slight postal tack with a number of interesting items: a catalogue offering home showings or delivery of health products; and
Lyndel W showed a favorite – a certificate still with its envelope – these two of the Sunbeams – show how both elements changed over not more than a decade.
