This exhibition runs from 17 January 2014 to 23 February 23, 2014 at The Substation, 1 Market St., Newport, Melbourne.
Radicalism includes a range of ephemera and archival material from the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives selected by Georgia Hutchison for her ‘radical reading room’; material includes posters, protest placards, a protest banner, scrapbooks, telephone counselling logbooks, gay liberation manifestos, zines and an annotated ‘beat map’ of Melbourne.
Exhibiting artists include: Eric Bridgeman; Brown Council; Georgia Hutchison; Tom Penney; Christopher Sciuto; Salote Tawale; Adele Varcoe; Sam Wallman; and William Yang. The exhibition is principally curated by Drew Pettifer.
The artists raise a number of important questions around the politics of queer identity in the early 21st century. Does identity still matter in our understanding of queerness? Where are the boundaries that limit discourses of queerness in our contemporary culture? Is queerness still linked to radicalism in any way?
