Picturesque isles of the south seas – tourism, trade and the marketing of the South Pacific.
Like to learn about the intersection between tourism, trade, military history, cultural heritage and the South Pacific islands? Curator and Special Collections Librarian Kristen Thornton from Deakin University will unveil insights from the library’s collection of publications relating to the South Pacific and its island nations, exploring how these paradisiacal destinations were marketed to the world.
2:05–2:45 MIMMO COZZOLINO
Yarra Tales – a look at what floats down the river.
For decades Visual Artist, Graphic Designer, Historian, and AGDA Hall of Fame Inductee Mimmo Cozzolino has walked along the Yarra near the Westgate Bridge, collecting dozens of small, uniquely shaped plastic containers that once held frozen cordial treats for children. Initially sold for a few cents, a lot of these containers inevitably made their way into the Yarra. Mimmo will share his journey and the motivations behind collecting these seemingly mundane, yet culturally meaningful objects.

Edwardian Burma in Postcards, 1901–1914.
Curious about colonial Burma’s visual narrative through the lens of golden age postcards? From government buildings to royal palaces, British churches to Burmese Buddhist temples, as well as snake charmers, local tattooists and Burmese princes, Tim Glanville will take us back to Edwardian Burma through his rare collection of postcards. Tim will illuminate these historical gems, offering a glimpse into a bygone era captured in intricate detail.
4:05–4:45 SASKIA ERICSON
The art of cooking, 1945–1985. A journey through an illustrated cookbook collection.
Closing our symposium, discover the creative convergence of art and food through the decades, in Graphic Designer Saskia Ericson’s collection of vintage illustrated cookbooks. From instructional linework to childlike drawings, spot illustrations, graphic art, kitsch and counterculture, these books are a literal feast for the eyes.
